One Quick Handwriting Transcription Challenge Every Day-for the genealogist in you
I'm going to worry about this one all day! Guessing: Given name - Jon for John or Jonathan - very ungermanic, I think.Surname: Last 3 letters are ule, with an umlaut over the "u". First letters could be Cj - again, very unGermanic. More Slavic, I think. How wrong am I? Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I guess.
Jann Huls (with an umlaut over the u)
Jan Lijttle, I would guess. that's more Dutch than German, but the bounderies did change a few times. we have New Amsterdam Dutch from Germany, his hometown was in the Netherlands when he came to America, but is now in Germany.
This is in old script and actually is Jann Huls (with an umlaut over the u). Born in the 1860s in Wiesens, Ostfriesland, Germany, he likely learned the old style script to write his name. He naturalized in the 1880s in Hancock County, Illinois, which is where this image was located.
