Why the Underlining?

Any thoughts on why the name Michal is underlined on this 1879 deed transcription from Hancock County, Illinois?

  1. Could it be an indication that the spelling is in question (or, alternatively, to indicate that the spelling is correct in spite of what everybody thinks)?

  2. My thoughts weren't as coherent as Charlotte's, but I too wondered if it had something to do with spelling.

  3. The underlining is an indication that the name was spelled "Michal" on the original deed and the clerk was including that incorrect spelling in his transcription.
