Is That in New York State--or Not?

Can you read this place of birth from a 1855 New York State Census record? The entire left and right hand page are reproduced below.

  1. It looks like a bad spelling of Allegany.

  2. I'm with Anon. Looks like the same town name is at the bottom of that page. Just 4 years earlier on March 28, 1851, the name was changed from "Town of Burton" to "Allegany." So someone up in Niagara county may not be up on the spelling in 1855.

  3. Allagania was my thought too. But, there is no county in New York State by that name.

The word was entered in that column on that page twice for two entirely separate people.
